The SOTA Gap Group Brussels — un collectif d'artistes
Notre motivation part du constat d'un faussé/gap dans le champ artistique — une période critique durant laquelle les artistes dit·e·s « émergent·e·s » peinent souvent à naviguer les complexités du début de carrière. Au lieu de fonctionner comme un pont, ce gap devient un moment de filtrage qui exclut celleux qui manquent de ressources essentielles : argent, statut social, capacités, espace de travail ou réseau professionnel.
Nous reconnaissons les difficultés auxquelles font face les artistes émergent·e·s, notamment le manque de connaissances sur des aspects fondamentaux tels que la demande de financements, la tarification et la vente d'œuvres, ou encore l'obtention d'un soutien institutionnel. La dépendance du secteur artistique à des réseaux informels ancrés dans le privilège contribue à un système potentiellement excluant.
Brève histoire du Gap
Le SOTA Gap Group a été initié en 2021 par Laura Oriol et Arthur Decock. Toustes deux venaient d'être diplômé·e·s et faisaient leurs premiers pas dans le milieu artistique. Confronté·e·s aux difficultés de cette transition, iels en sont arrivé·e·s à la même conclusion : leurs écoles respectives les avaient très peu préparé·e·s, et le secteur artistique semblait presque inaccessible.
Iels se sont tourné·e·s vers SOTA (State of the Arts), et ensemble, iels ont organisé des réunions ouvertes et des discussions collectives. Le Gap Group a ensuite proposé le projet « Pairing is Caring », un système de mentorat dans lequel des artistes émergent·e·s sont mis·e·s en relation avec des artistes établi·e·s ou des travailleur·euse·s culturel·le·s expérimenté·e·s.
Après avoir expérimenté « Pairing is Caring » à Anvers et à Gand, le Gap Group Brussels a vu le jour en 2024 avec Laura Oriol, Vanda Tollas et Benjamin Huynh. Cela a marqué un nouveau défi : adapter le format aux spécificités de Bruxelles et à ses communautés multilingues.
Principes fondateurs
- Partage des connaissances. Nous mettons l'accent sur le partage et la diffusion de connaissances — en particulier celles qui ne sont pas enseignées dans les écoles mais qui sont essentielles pour construire une carrière artistique durable.
- Engagement mutuel. Les jeunes artistes et artistes émergent·e·s sont invité·e·s à postuler et à s'engager dans le programme de mentorat, les groupes de soutien entre pairs, les ateliers et les sessions de travail collectives.
- Inclusion et soutien. Nous faisons un effort particulier pour inclure les nouvelleaux arrivant·e·s et les artistes sans papiers. Nous collaborons étroitement avec SOTA.
- Solidarité dans le secteur artistique. Notre objectif principal est de soutenir et renforcer la solidarité au sein du secteur artistique.

The SOTA Gap Group Brussels — an artist-run collective
Our motivation stems from the recognition of a gap in the art field — a critical period during which artists considered "emerging" often struggle to navigate the complexities of starting their careers. Instead of functioning as a bridge, this gap becomes a filtering moment that excludes those who lack essential resources such as money, social status, ability, studio space, or a professional network.
We acknowledge the challenges faced by emerging artists, including the lack of knowledge on fundamental aspects such as applying for funding, pricing and selling artwork, and gaining institutional support. The art field's reliance on informal networks rooted in privilege contributes to a system that can be exclusionary.
A brief history of the Gap
The SOTA Gap Group was initiated in 2021 by Laura Oriol and Arthur Decock. Both had just graduated and were beginning to make their way into the artistic field. Confronted with the difficulties of this transition, they reached the same conclusion: their respective schools had done very little to prepare them, and the art sector felt nearly impossible to access.
They reached out to SOTA (State of the Arts), and together organized open meetings and collective discussions. The Gap Group then proposed the project "Pairing is Caring", a career-mentorship system in which emerging artists are paired with established artists or cultural workers.
After experimenting with "Pairing is Caring" in Antwerp and Ghent, the Gap Group Brussels came to life in 2024 with Laura Oriol, Vanda Tollas, and Benjamin Huynh — adapting the format to Brussels' specificities and its multilingual communities.
Core principles
- Knowledge Sharing. We emphasize the sharing and dissemination of knowledge — especially the kind that is not taught in schools but is crucial for building a sustainable artistic career.
- Mutual Commitment. Young and emerging artists are invited to apply and commit to the mentorship program, peer-support groups, workshops, and collective working sessions.
- Inclusivity and Support. We make a special effort to include newcomers and artists without papers. We collaborate closely with SOTA.
- Solidarity in the Art Sector. Our primary goal is to support and sustain solidarity within the art sector.

The SOTA Gap Group Brussels — een door kunstenaars gedragen collectief
Onze motivatie komt voort uit het besef dat er een kloof bestaat in het kunstveld — een kritieke periode waarin kunstenaars die als "beginnend" worden beschouwd vaak moeite hebben om de complexiteit van het begin van hun carrière te navigeren. In plaats van een brug te vormen, wordt deze kloof een filtermoment dat mensen uitsluit die niet beschikken over essentiële middelen zoals geld, sociale status, vaardigheden, atelierruimte of een professioneel netwerk.
Een korte geschiedenis van The Gap
De SOTA Gap Group werd in 2021 opgericht door Laura Oriol en Arthur Decock. Beiden waren net afgestudeerd en begonnen hun weg te zoeken in het artistieke veld. Hun scholen hadden hen nauwelijks voorbereid en de kunstsector voelde bijna onbereikbaar aan.
Ze namen contact op met SOTA (State of the Arts) en organiseerden samen open bijeenkomsten en collectieve gesprekken. Hieruit ontstond het project "Pairing is Caring", een mentorprogramma waarin beginnende kunstenaars worden gekoppeld aan gevestigde of ervaren kunstenaars of cultuurwerkers.
Na experimenten in Antwerpen en Gent ontstond in 2024 de Gap Group Brussels, met Laura Oriol, Vanda Tollas en Benjamin Huynh — het format aangepast aan de specificiteit van Brussel en zijn meertalige gemeenschappen.
Kernprincipes
- Kennisdeling. We leggen de nadruk op het delen en verspreiden van kennis, vooral kennis die niet op school wordt aangeleerd maar essentieel is voor een duurzame artistieke carrière.
- Wederzijds engagement. Jonge en beginnende kunstenaars worden uitgenodigd zich te engageren voor het mentorprogramma, de peer-supportgroepen, workshops en collectieve werksessies.
- Inclusiviteit en ondersteuning. We betrekken actief nieuwkomers en kunstenaars zonder papieren. We werken nauw samen met SOTA.
- Solidariteit in de kunstsector. Ons belangrijkste doel is solidariteit binnen de kunstsector te ondersteunen en te versterken.
